Become a Shotmaker

by: Joe Buttitta Occasionally you may not want to hit the ball straight. There are times you would like to spin the ball right-to-left (draw) or left-to-right (fade) to avoid some sort of obstacle. These are not only shots for professionals. Amateurs can learn to make them as well. TO FADE:Open the stance slightly and play the ball a bit more forward than normal. Keep the clubface pointing at your intended target, but swing along your now-open footline.TO DRAW:Close the stance slightly and play the ball a bit further back than usual. Keep the clubface pointing directly at your target, but swing along your now-closed footline.These are "path" fades and draws that require no special hand action at impact, just a normal release. They each require quite a bit of practice to become proficient. Use the driving range as your workshop. Then dare to make these shots on the course. You'll become known as a "shotmaker", just like the pros who, by the way, rarely try to hit it dead straight. |
